NEW HARMONY, IN – The Legendary Greathouse Island on the Wabash River sold for a total of $2,326,700 Wednesday February 14 in an auction that attracted more than 150 people and saw aggressive competition for the land that eventually sold to two local investors at The Auction Center in New Harmony.
The 1414-acre farm offered in eleven tracts sold for approximately $1,645 per acre and auction company representatives indicated that it was attractive primarily for hunting and recreational use. The island is located 10-miles west of Mt. Vernon, IN.
“Greathouse Island is a storied property, and has long provided a quality recreational and wildlife habitat. Demand for hunting and recreational land continues to grow as hunters are being forced into more rural zones, and the market indicated this at the auction” said Bill Wilson, a Principal Auctioneer of William Wilson Auction Realty, which marketed the property and conducted the auction.
While Greathouse Island did include 725 acres of farmland, Wilson noted that farming interests were secondary to the ideal recreational features of the Island.
